about
Written for Peter Mulvey's weekly songwriting group, October 2021. The prompt was "range." I was late with my song, a bird had died on my doorstep, and I wrote the fastest, simplest song I could think of in order to meet the deadline. In the studio, it evolved into one of my favorites in this whole batch. The organ! The handclaps! Enjoy!

WAXWING
Lisa Bastoni
A cedar waxwing landed on my doorstep
Last night, last night
Picked her up with a heavy shovel
So light, so light
Muddy gray with a flash of yellow in the
Blue sky, blue sky
Lying in the ivy but her soul flies
So high, so high
You can stand in the doorway and listen for her call
You can wait there all day but you won’t hear
Anything at all
Too many berries and her heart stopped
Drunk on fruit, drunk on fruit
I can’t sleep, I’m waiting on the sunrise
Thinking of you, thinking of you
Oooh, oooh
You can stand in the doorway and listen for her call
You can wait there all day but you won’t hear
Anything at all
I can’t sleep, I’m waiting on the sunrise
I can’t sleep, I’m waiting on the sunrise
Oooh, oooh
Oooh, oooh

The instrumentation and songwriting in this album is really top-tier. Aofie is one of my favorite folk/alt-country artists and she performs wonderfully, bringing her unique tone of voice to this project. This album was my first step into Aofie's artistry, and is firmly one of my favorite albums. rileyridgway
